Making Weekends Meaningful for Children

After a full week of school, weekends are a time for children to rest and recharge. But they can also be a valuable opportunity to experience something different and learn new skills.

Children do not develop skills simply by being told about them. They need opportunities to try, practise, make mistakes and try again. When children spend most of their free time without meaningful interaction or new experiences, they may miss important opportunities to develop communication, social interaction, independence and problem-solving skills.

For some children, this may also mean becoming overly dependent on screens or finding it harder to engage in activities that require patience, interaction and participation.

Academic learning can also continue in a different way. Weekend learning does not have to feel like another school day. It can be fun, interactive and refreshing — allowing children to practise what they have learned while exploring new topics and meeting new friends.

At Lumora Education, our Weekend Enrichment Programme Penang combines Learning and Hands-on Activities for both mainstream and neurodivergent children. From academic learning to cooking, STEM, creative activities, sensory experiences and group activities, children are given opportunities to learn by doing.

Weekends are valuable time. Give children opportunities to use that time to learn, explore, connect and grow.
